Abstract This article argues that projects to make Britain's imperial history visible the public through display of statues, establishment a museum, and renovation historical markers solidified colonial narrative about British empire's permanence in India during first two decades twentieth century, which anticolonial unrest threatened occupation subcontinent. The monumental scale expressed permanence. An aesthetic linked cities important showcasing empire Calcutta, New Delhi, London. Contrary mainstream assumptions commemorations should be preserved for sake documenting history, these enacted story triumph at moment when mass campaigns against rule were occurring.
